RHS National Foreign Language Honor Societies

The National Foreign Language Honor Societies recently held their induction ceremonies at Riverhead High School Fifteen students were inducted into the French Honor Society; 21 students were inducted into the Latin Honor Society; and 32 students were inducted into the Spanish Honor society--for a total of 68 students! In order to qualify for the National Foreign Language Honor Society, a student must maintain a 90% or higher throughout three years of study and maintain an overall grade point average of 85% or higher.

Mrs. Kathryn Luce, the Assistant Chairperson for the Foreign Language Department and a graduate of Riverhead High School, shared that she was an exchange student in Bolivia during high school. “That opportunity was responsible for my passion for the Spanish language; it ignited the flame,” she shared. “You may not become an exchange student in high school, but most colleges have an opportunity to live and study abroad. I encourage you to take advantage of that opportunity, if you can” she counseled. “It will open your eyes to the world in a whole new way.”

Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Pinckney greeted the students and their guests and stated approvingly, “Knowing a language will help you in many ways throughout your life. I encourage you to share your accomplishments with your community and with the global world in which we live.”

This year’s guest speaker was the school’s foreign exchange student, Virginia “Kiki” Garate. Also participating and speaking at the ceremony were officers from each of the honor societies: French--Jacqueline Ross and Elizabeth Villani (Co-Presidents), Traci Kanwischer, Secretary, and Ashley Henry, Treasurer; Spanish--Amanda Kowalsick, President, Ashley Meekins, Vice-President, Monika Wadolowski, Secretary, and Michael Roth, Treasurer; Latin--Jessica Lamont, President, Joe Magee, Vice President, Ed Wansor, Secretary, and Stephanie Beierle, Treasurer.
