Riley
Poets on the Road

Donna Verbeck’s second grade class from the Riley Avenue
School took the daring step of not only reading their poetry
aloud, but also taking their act on the road. They traveled
to the EastEnders Coffee House on Main Street in Riverhead
to read their poems to an audience that consisted largely
of their biggest fans—their parents and grandparents.
They brought along a basket filled with copies of an illustrated
book of their poems entitled, appropriately, "Kids' Poems",
that they published to sell for $5.00 each with the proceeds
going to the victims of the tsunami.
On one page of the book, a colorful poem entitled “Crayons”
lay to one side of a rainbow of colors that ended in a pot
of gold. The poem's young author confidently read the poem
she had written and illustrated into the microphone at the
coffee house, which often hosts poets, singers, drurmmers
and other entertainers throughout the week.
Crayons
in a box
all different colors
in a box
just like a rainbow
in a pot of gold
colors
like gold in a pot
like green, like blue
I like them all
A very beautifully dressed young lady read her poem “Fluffy”
about her “crazy” dog.
He
rips up paper.
That’s how I know, that’s how I know
he’s a crazy dog.
I take him for a walk,
when there’s another dog he goes crazy.
That’s how I know, that’s how I know
he’s a crazy dog.
He loves me so.
That’s how I know, that’s how I know
he’s a crazy dog.
A few minutes to visit with the fans and a quick treat, and
the poets were back on the bus.
