Recent
Graduates who received Scholarships to Play in College
In the graduating class of 2005, three seniors were awarded full scholarships
to Division I schools. Mike
Owen, who played linebacker and tailback on the Blue Waves Championship
football team will be playing with the Syracuse University Orangemen
in the fall of 2005. RHS track star Ellen
Dougherty was nationally ranked and continued to excel in the spring
after an outstanding performance in the winter season. She received
a full scholarship to Villanova University. RHS lacrosse standouts Jeremy
Hobson and Travis
Meekins are both members of NY Tech's Division II 2008 National
Champion Men's Larosse Team. Ellen Dougherty and Mike
Owen were chosen as the News Review's "Athletes of the
Year."
In the graduating class of 2006, Bryan Hale received a scholarship
to play lacrosse in college. He was also chosen as the News Review's "Athlete of the Year" along with track star Ashley Lewis.
In the graduating class of 2007, seven senior men from the
Varsity
Lacrosse team will be playing lacrosse on college teams in the fall
of 2007. Three Varsity Lacrosse players were given special awards at
the Suffolk County Lacrosse Coaches 2007 Awards Banquet. Andrew Nadeau
(Sr.) was named All-Division Defense; Kyle Hubbard (Frosh.) was named
Rookie of the Year (Goalie); William Grossklaus (Sr.) was named All-County
Defense and was awarded the Eric
Sopracasa Scholarship Award. Graduating track star Shamel
Lewis will be running for Syracuse University in the fall of 2007.
Jackie Zilnicki and Shamel Lewis were chosen as the News
Review's "Athletes of the Year."
In the graduating class of 2008, Heather Riley, Ashley Bell and John Andrejack received scholarships to play on teams in college.
In addition to interscholastic sports, the district has an
excellent intramural and physical education program.

2004
District Athletic Office Scholar/Athlete Team Award
In
the Spring of 2004 sports season, the Riverhead High School Blue Waves
were awarded the "Scholar/Athlete Team Award" by the NY State
Public High School Athletic Association for "outstanding scholastic
achievement by varsity level student athletes." Not only are our
athletes outstanding competitors, they are also "scholars."
In addition, the school's teams are well-known each year for their sportsmanship
awards.
2005
Section XI “Good Sports” Award Winners
In
the Fall of 2005, the Riverhead Blue Waves were
awarded the 2005 Section XI “Good
Sports” Award. Riverhead’s teams scored the highest
overall average of sportsmanship team points. The teams are rated by
opposing teams and awarded by NYPHSAA.
"This is a prestigious award presented to the top Suffolk
sports programs as nominated by Section XI and the Sportsmanship Chairman,
Mr. Mical Browne," notes Bill Groth, RCSD Athletic Director. "This
award is a testament to the pride, character and class of our student-athletes
and the commitment to excellence by their coaches," concludes Mr.
Groth.

The

Intramurals
and Special Programs
In
addition to interscholastic sports, the district has an excellent intramural
and physical education program.
The Intramural Golf
Team thanks the Cherry Creek Country Club for their generous donation
of 200 golf clubs to the school's golf program.
Some
of the special programs the Physical Education Department have participated
in include the Core-Based
Fitness Training Program,
the Coca Cola Corporation's Step-O-Meter Program, Project
Adventure classes, the Rowing
Club, the Outdoors Club and the President's
Fitness Challenge.
