Angela Smith and
Shamel Lewis
Riverhead
sprinter Shamel Lewis finished his
high school track and field career on a high note. He ran
his fastest 100-meter time of the season, 10.78 seconds,
to finish second in the federation race in the state meet.
Angela Smith of Riverhead finished third in the state Division
I finals for the 100 (12.19) and 200 meters (25.19). She
was also fourth and seventh in those respective events at
the federation level.
NYSPHSAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
By Bob Liepa
(June
13, 2007) - One
of the briefest, yet celebrated high school track and field
careers for a Riverhead athlete came to an end Saturday.
While Shamel Lewis didn't get the winner's medal he was
aiming for in the New York State Public High School Athletic
Association Championships, he did come awfully close. He
will run at Syracuse University next year.
What amounted to the length of a chest lean at the finish
line was all that separated Lewis from a gold medal and
a federation title in the 100 meters at Dietz Stadium in
Kingston. Running in hot, humid weather that some sprinters
like, the Riverhead Blue Waves senior finished second in
10.78 seconds, right behind Jordon Manns of Lyndonville,
who won in 10.69. More<
