Athletics - Highlights – Spring 2008
Varsity Softball clinched a spot in the Section XI post
season playoff schedule.
Our first ever Girls’ Varsity Golf program completed
their season by winning the prestigious NY State Public
High School Athletic Association Team Scholar Athlete Award
with an unweighted team GPA of 93.5.
Varsity Baseball also earned a post season playoff opportunity
and the NYSPHSAA Team Scholar Athlete Award with an unweighted
team GPA of 92.7
JV Baseball won the Sportsmanship Award for League IV; had
the best record in League IV; and Rob Maccone was named
JV Coach of the Year.
Our Spring 2008 Varsity Crew team hosted the Big Duck Regatta
at their home “field”, Peconic Bay. They also
achieved Team Scholar-Athlete status with an impressive
GPA of 90.5. Ed O’Neill and Dylan Gould are the 2008
New York State Junior Double Event Champions. This victory
was achieved at Saratoga Springs on May 11, 2008.
Varsity Boys Lacrosse achieved the NYSPHSAA Team Scholar
Athlete Award with an average of 94.6.
Varsity Boys Tennis weighed in with a team average of 90.2
and also won the Team Scholar Athlete Award.
Boys’ Spring Track broke the school record for the
4 x 800 event. Nick Constandy, John Razzano, Nick Grefe
and Drew Dillingham turned in a time of 8:25:84 FAT. Joe
Verdeber won the pole vault and qualified for the State

Girls Spring Track also won the NYSPHSAA Team Scholar Athlete
Award with an unweighted team average of 96.6. Ashley Bell
qualified in the 100 and 200 meters and ran the anchor leg
on the winning 4 x 100 (12.4 seconds) and she took second
in the 200 (25.44) at the state
qualifiers. The 4 x 100 team consists of Ashley Bell,
Quiera DeCosta, Victoria Crum and Ellie Markewitz. The team
finished the race in a season-best time of 49.2 seconds.
Ashley Bell and Heather Riley received athletic scholarships
to run track on the collegiate level. >MORE
The Riverhead Athletic Department has been nominated for
the 2007-08 Section XI Sportsmanship Award. This would mark
the second time the Blue Waves have distinguished themselves
in this area.
In addition to the new Girls’ Golf program, opportunities
for Riverhead’s young women expanded in Girls’
Lacrosse. Due to popular demand, a Middle School team has
been established with plans for both a Middle School team
and a JV9 team next year.

Scholar/Athlete Team Award Winners
In the Spring of 2004, the RHS Blue Waves were awarded the
“Scholar/Athlete Team Award” by the NY State
Public High School Athletic Association for “outstanding
scholastic achievement by varsity level athletes.”
2005
Section XI “Good Sports” Award Winners
This Fall, the Athletic Department learned that the Riverhead
Blue Waves were awarded the 2005 Section XI “Good
Sports” Award. Riverhead’s teams scored the
highest overall average of sportsmanship team points. The
teams are rated by opposing teams and awarded by NYPHSAA.
"This is a prestigious award presented to the top Suffolk
sports programs as nominated by Section XI and the Sportsmanship
Chairman, Mr. Mical Browne," notes Bill Groth, RCSD
Athletic Director. "This award is a testament to the
pride, character and class of our student-athletes and the
commitment to excellence by their coaches," concludes
Mr. Groth.
