The Town of Riverhead has a population of 33,000 and is located on the eastern end of Long Island ("East End") in Suffolk County, 70 miles from NYC. Riverhead was founded in 1792 and is the county seat. It is bordered by the Peconic River and the Great Peconic Bay on the south, and the Long Island Sound on the north.

The area's land base is largely agricultural, which produces flowers, potatoes, vegetables, grapes, and sod. Farmstands and orchards are popular stops for visitors who wish to bring home fresh-picked produce.

The Atlantis Aquarium Facility and The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation overlooking the Peconic River is both a popular tourist site and a partner in education for the local schools. In addition, the Science Museum, Suffolk County Historical Society, the East End Arts Center, and Cornell Cooperative Extension are popular partners in learning.

Children who attend the Riverhead School District are drawn from three townships, Riverhead, Brookhaven and Southampton. Riverhead has worked hard to improve the waterfront, add popular destinations like the Tanger Outlet Center and Splish Splash Water Park, while maintaining its natural rural attractions.

Location, scholarships, business partnerships, active volunteer participation as mentors and helpers in the schools, as well as a strong sense of community make Riverhead schools a good place to educate children.
