MIDDLE MASQUES PRODUCTION "THE WIZARD OF OZ"

PERFECTLY NAMED

(June 15, 2010 - RIVERHEAD, NY)
If ever a school’s spring drama was aptly named, this is it.  The Riverhead Middle School Middle Masques secured the rights to put on a stage production of the well-known classic musical “The Wizard of Oz”.  This "dramady" showcased the acting, set design, and technical skills of approximately 30 Riverhead students in grades seven and eight.

Student actors, under the direction of a student/staff production committee, worked closely with lighting and sound students, under the direction of social studies teacher Mr. Hewkin, and students Michael Bragg and Erik Markowski, in daily rehearsal sessions.

Ryan McGill,  the student director, stated, “It was great.  I thought the cast did an excellent job adapting to a non-musical version of the show."

RMS Principal Andrea Pekar noted, “The show was wonderfully entertaining and rich in important themes for people of all ages and particularly relevent to middle school students.  In short, when Dorothy is dropped into the Land of Oz, her goal is to find her way back home to Kansas. While on the yellow brick road to the Emerald City to realize her quest to return home to Kansas, Dorothy meets several friends with hopes of achieving their dreams as well. As in life, these characters must overcome obstacles in pursuit of the ultimate goal of happiness. When they encounter Oz for the first time, his demands of them are difficult ones. Will the characters be able to meet the challenges placed before them? Will one wicked witch stop their journey? These are great questions for middle school students at this stage of their development.”

The show was directed by Mr. Edward Tholl and produced by Mrs. Patricia Skura. As noted, the student director was Ryan McGill.
