CAP Celebrates 25th Annual Say NO To Drugs March
CAP sponsored its 25th Annual Say NO to Drugs March on Friday, June 4, 2010. This year’s honored guest and keynote speaker was former NY Jets football player Bobby Jackson, who also led CAP’s very first march in 1986. CAP also presented a special award to NYS Senator Kenneth P. LaValle who, in 1986, was instrumental in obtaining the funds that allowed CAP to incorporate and expand its services.
Following the march, there was a ceremony on the steps of Pulaski Street School in which Mr. Jackson and Senator LaValle and other dignitaries addressed the students and community. Michael’s entry was a website application that allowed scientists to study in rapid succession the penetration of crystals by a beam of light. Due in part to this presentation, Michael was chosen to participate in the BNL High School Summer Research Program this summer and he will be mentored by Dr. Alan Orville who is a Biochemist working in protein crystallography. Dr. Orville is the scientist Mike wrote the program for and he apparently went in and requested Mike before the application period even opened! The paper was submitted to The Journal of Biochemistry and they have Mike listed with the authors and his affiliation as the High School Research Program. >MORE
BNL PRESENTATION BY RESEARCH STUDENTS (via Adobe Connection)
Part of an international conference at the NSLS
Four RHS Research students have been working in partnership with Brookhaven National Laboratories in a study of oysters since 2009. The students interface with Brookhaven scientists live via webcam. They receive instructions from BNL Physicist Dr. Keith Jones, utilize information from the National Synchrotron Light Source at BNL, and engage in labs in the high school and through online research.
In May of 2010, these four Riverhead students gave a presentation from our school via webcam and broadcast internationally live via the internet. The audience was made up of scientists and educators from around the world, who were gathered together at BNL.
Our students described the technologies that allowed them to do experiments at the lab while remaining in the classroom. They also explained how real time data was obtained and used in their research. The students closed with a brief talk on other projects that have grown out of their original work with the lab.
The Lab is expanding this opportunity to include other schools by offering a program for teachers and administrators this summer. The students at RHS have a right to be proud of the fact that they are pioneers in this adventure.

“THANK YOU FOR SERVING!”
Veteran Sam Cila speaks with students at Aquebogue Elementary School
“Memorial Day is coming up soon,” explains Mrs. Bucholz to the assembled group of kindergartners. “And remember that is the day when we remember all the people who have served in the armed forces. Evan’s dad, Mr. Sam Cila, is one of those people who served his country. He is going to talk to you.”
Sam Cila was part of the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment out of New York. His unit was deployed in October 2004. At the end of his year-long deployment Sam was injured by an IED blast on patrol outside of the Green Zone in Baghdad.
“The blast blew out my left side taking with it my brachial artery and almost all of my left bicep and tricep,” shares Mr. Cila on his website. . .
Mr. Cila’s visit with the kindergartners at Aquebogue was meant to both inspire and inform the children about new possiblities in science and the importance of finding hope and support in the midst of sadness. “I’m here because I want you to know about all the possibilities open to you. In this room somewhere are the next scientists, doctors, and maybe dog trainers.” (Mr. Cila pauses to introduce his Canine Companion, Gillian, who lies at his feet.) “Some time in the future you might help design new devices to help people like me who have lost limbs.” >MORE
HORTON AVENUE
Designing a way to help
RHS sophomore Drew Achilich pledged to do something to help the people on Horton Avenue. Drew designed a simple T-shirt, that bears the Horton Avenue street sign with the school’s Blue Waves logo on the left sleeve--the one closest to the heart. He hopes the T-shirt will help raise awareness and funds for the flood victims on Horton Avenue.
The T-shirts were on sale at the high school. The shirts can be purchased by emailing: david.zimbler@riverhead.net or calling 369-6727. The money raised will be given to the Riverhead Lions Club, who is working in conjunction with the First Baptist Church, to help the flood victims.
“Once the water recedes, people forget,” notes RHS Principal David Zimbler, “but the problem hasn’t gone away. The people who lived on Horton Avenue still need help, and I’m proud of Drew and all of the RHS students who are trying to make a difference through this effort. They have already raised about $1,000.” >MORE
