The Aquebogue School is one of four elementary (K-4) buildings in the Riverhead Central School District. It is a child-centered school that now serves approximately 517 students. While the original building is old (the cornerstone reads 1929), it has been well-maintained. Several recent updates include: a new wing and cafeteria, new roofing, new sidewalks, new parking and asphalt, new kitchen, new computers, refurbished library, new flooring, extensive refinishing and repainting.

A dedicated, experienced staff maintains high expectations for all students. A caring community represented by the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO), the Site Based Management Team (SBMT), and numerous other volunteers play an active role in the success of our school. Our students perform well on a variety of formal and informal assessments, and our school has been regularly recognized as a Suffolk County Reading Council Honor School.

Teachers work diligently to carefully blend the best practices of teacher-directed and student-centered instruction in their classrooms. Reading specialists coordinate the reading program and our remedial reading services. Preschool, special education and resource room, and ESL classes are also available. Our nurse, speech therapist, part-time psychologist, social worker, and occupational and physical therapists provide additional support for our students.

Students at Riverhead High School and Riley Avenue and Aquebogue elementary schools recently learned about various art techniques from visiting artist and author Joyce Raimondo.

During the sessions, Ms. Raimondo led age-appropriate discussions about expressionism in art and an analysis of several pieces. Students explored the differences between the more obvious facial expressions/body language evident in objective artwork and expressive abstract artwork.  

The discussions culminated with a hands-on piece in which students worked on action-painting techniques used by abstract expressionist artist Jackson Pollock.

Fourth-graders at Aquebogue Elementary School dove into Native American history during a full-day presentation made by representatives of “Journey’s into American Indian Territory” on Nov. 29. 

During the program, led by Jamie Reason, a member of the Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee, and Robert Vetter, an anthropologist and educational consultant, students learned about ancient teachings and customs of Native Americans. 

The program, which ties into students’ unit of study on Native Americans, included hands-on activities and an opportunity to see and touch Native American artifacts. Students played authentic Native American games, listened and danced to Native American music and participated in a clay workshop. They also watched a film that depicted what life was like for Native Americans after the European settlers arrived.
