Fourth-graders at Riley Avenue Elementary School have been complementing their ELA skills by participating in a weekly book club run by library media specialist Amelia Estevez Creedon.

Each week, the students meet to discuss a chosen book. During the session, they sit together with pillows and stuffed animals to share their thoughts on a book’s literary elements with each other and through an online book discussion website.

“The book club is an opportunity for enrichment for students who are avid readers,” said Ms. Creedon. “Students engage with text outside the classroom in a meaningful and motivating manner.”

This year, the members of the three-year-old book club have already read, “I Survived the Eruption of Mount St. Helens” by Lauren Tarshis, with the books for the reading donated by the Parent Association. The students will next tackle “Beetle Boy” by M. G. Leonard.

To join Book Club students must show a strong interest in reading and be selected by their teacher.
