A new club at Riverhead High School has established a community of female students who are working together to build each other’s character and confidence while also boosting self-awareness.

During the after-school Women’s Empowerment Club, advised by faculty members Penelope Boerum, Kimberly Esteve-Garcia and Norma Jenkins, students participate in a wide variety of activities that promote self-acceptance and positivity. They also discuss gender equality and social issues pertaining to women.

Recently, 20 club members took part in a self-defense class led by sensei Tim Condon of Riverhead Martial Arts, who taught them how to apply practical self-defense skills for personal safety.
