Riverhead High School sophomores Alex Garcia and Amanda Ribeiro recently participated in Brookhaven National Laboratory’s 27th annual Partners in Science program.

As part of the program, Garcia and Ribeiro toured the National Synchrotron Light Source II at the lab and learned about other research taking place at BNL, including studies related to nano photos and X-rays. They also heard from BNL scientist Lisa Miller, a biophysical chemist who is studying the chemical makeup of cells and tissues using synchrotron-based infrared and X-ray imaging.

Following Miller’s presentation, the students were able to speak one-on-one with BNL scientists about science research projects they are exploring.

The students attended the event with their science teacher, Lance Mion, and library media specialist Kim McGurk. They were selected, according to Ms. McGurk because they “exemplified the spirit of the BNL Program.”
