Corey Swenk’s fifth-graders at Pulaski Street School in the Riverhead Central School District are learning that a little bit of kindness can go a long way.

As part of a “kindness rocks” initiative, spearheaded by parent Angela Ohlbaum, the students painted more than 60 rocks with colorful messages of affection and warmth. The rocks were then hidden throughout the Town of Riverhead for community members to find. Those who find the rocks are encouraged to re-hide them for others to find and share their discovery via the Facebook page, 224 Rocks. The initiative is aimed at sparking acts of kindness throughout the community.

The project coincides with the students’ English language arts studies, in which they are currently reading “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio.
