Dear Riverhead School Community,

As a follow-up to our letter regarding the moisture and mold concerns at Aquebogue Elementary School, I would like to inform you of a similar concern at Riverhead Middle School. Early this morning, during a building inspection by our maintenance crews, mold was discovered on the underside of a handful of tables in the cafeteria. Upon discovery, our facilities crew took immediate action to eradicate the issue.

Air samples taken earlier this week, at the Middle School, have shown that there is no reason for concern and, as with Aquebogue, Virex II 256 was used to thoroughly clean the area and lunch service was not impacted. In light of the continued humidity we are currently experiencing, early morning visual inspections of each building are ongoing, and our facilities department is working diligently to ensure all surfaces are properly cleaned.

According to JC Broderick, the District’s environmental engineers, other school districts on Long Island are experiencing similar issues, as the humid weather persists. We appreciate your patience as we deal with this matter. As always, safety is our top priority and we will continue to update you.

Regards,
Dr. Aurelia L. Henriquez
Superintendent of Schools
