The Riverhead High School girls cross-country team earned the League III championship title after a 17-43 win at Sunken Meadow State Park on Oct. 16. The team has not garnered a championship title since 1988.

The Blue Waves’ league win culminated a perfect 5-0 dual-meet season led by juniors Christina Yakabowski and Megan Kielbasa. Yakabowski, who has won every race this year, finished the 2.8-mile course on Oct. 16 in 17 minutes, 35 seconds. Kielbasa followed behind her with a time of 18:31.

The team will next compete in the Section XI Division Championships at Sunken Meadow on Oct. 23.

The Riverhead School District congratulates every member of the team for their hard work and dedication and wishes them luck at the upcoming meet.
