A Monster of a Time

Drawings of monsters came to life as part of a student community service project led by Keri Stromski, a kindergarten teacher at Aquebogue Elementary School in the Riverhead Central School District.

Called Merry Monster, the project asked kindergartners to draw a monster using a template. The drawings were then given to students in the high school’s Art Club and Creative Crafts art class. The high schoolers worked over several weeks to turn the drawings into stuffed animals, sewing them together with felt, buttons and stuffing.

The project culminated on Dec. 19, when the high school students presented the kindergartners with their new stuffed monster friends. The event included a video of the making of the monsters, a reading of Mo Willems’ “Leonardo the Terrible Monster” and a holiday singalong.
