Fifth-graders at Riverhead’s Pulaski Street Elementary School recently sent postcards with messages of encouragement to children battling cancer and other diseases through the Sending Smiles organization. The initiative was part of a project-based learning experience led by school librarian Amelia Estevez Creedon.

All of the postcards were thoughtfully personalized with beautiful illustrations, jokes and riddles, and words of inspiration.

The project came after the students read “A Hat for Mrs. Goldman” by Michelle Edwards. The book tells a story of making the world a better place through simple acts of kindness. Following the reading, the students discussed ways they can impact the world around them by helping those most in need.
