Fourth-graders in the Riverhead Central School District recently came together in the spirit of art and unity to create a mural that was displayed at the district’s Black History Month celebration on Feb. 13.

The mural features paper hands, colorfully decorated by the students using thin markers and the Zentangle technique of drawing structured patterns, which they had learned earlier in the school year. Each hand features the artwork of several students.

All of the hands were added to a giant tree cutout that has been affixed to the mural with the slogan “unity grows through community.”
