In addition to participating in the districtwide Black History Month celebration on Feb. 13, Phillips Avenue Elementary School in the Riverhead Central School District has been paying tribute to black history through a variety of activities.

To kick off the month, first-grade teacher Ines Robinson teamed up with art teacher Christine Shay to design a Black History Month mural to greet students as they enter the school. The artwork was assembled by the teachers with the help of art students.

Phillips Avenue also hosted its own Black History Month celebration for parents and students, invited a step squad from the Longwood Central School District to perform for students during an assembly and hosted children’s author HetHeru AnkhBaRa.
