Plunging into Reading

Students at Roanoke Avenue Elementary School in the Riverhead Central School District were rewarded for their diligent reading with a splash, as Principal Thomas Payton plunged into a kiddie pool filled with water on the cold afternoon of March 8.

The entertaining stunt capped off the school’s annual Reading Week. As part of the initiative, students were challenged to read for a total 105,000 minutes, a goal they surpassed by 963 minutes. In addition to reading as much as they could during the week, the students took part in other literary activities, such as Poem in Your Pocket Day. The creative writing event asked students to pen poems and store them in pouches they had decorated. The students then shared their poems with their peers throughout the day.
