The sweet smell of chocolate chip cookies wafting out of Jaimie Draskin’s fifth grade classroom at Riverhead’s Pulaski Street Elementary School on June 10 drew in a line of “customers” who eagerly awaited their turn to purchase a cookie or two with “school cash.”

The cookie sale was part of a hands-on economics unit in which the fifth graders learned about various aspects of business. The students worked in teams to create cookie businesses that would yield the most amount of “school cash.” They designed advertisements, assisted their teacher in mixing and measuring ingredients, set price points and created finance reports.
