To foster an environment where students are encouraged to try new things and become more interested in music, Aquebogue Elementary School music teacher Dara Coppolone engaged her students in a Russian folk dance on Sept. 19.

During the lesson, the students were taught the words to the 1970s Russian pop song “Sasha” and the moves to go with it.

“Introducing folk dancing into instruction immerses students in an environment that is rich in vocabulary, history and culture,” said Coppolone, adding that students developed an understanding of rhythm, musical form, dynamics, and various instruments and forms of music.
