To mark Hispanic Heritage Month, students at Phillips Avenue Elementary School participated in a schoolwide celebration on Oct. 10.

As part of the annual event, the students learned more about Spanish-speaking countries, including Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Spain and Venezuela. The day kicked off with a schoolwide assembly, complete with Spanish dancing.

Students then took a “walking tour” of the countries they are learning about.  The tour featured hallway displays of each country created by each grade level. Students were also given “passports” that they used to write notes about what they learned during the tour.

The celebration culminated with an after-school feast, where students and parents tried different foods from a variety of Spanish cultures.
