Pledging Peace

Members of the Peacemakers Club at Phillips Avenue and Roanoke Avenue elementary schools in the Riverhead Central School District have been working to bring peace and kindness to their schools.

Throughout the months of October and November, these Riverhead fourth graders are visiting classrooms in their respective schools to read Bob Sornson and Maria Dismondy’s “The Juice Box Bully” to fellow students. They are also encouraging their peers to sign an antibullying poster as a pledge to be kind to one another and speak up for classmates who need help.

During their lunch periods, the club members meet with their adviser, Shannon Kutner, a social worker at Roanoke who works with the Riverhead Community Awareness Program. They also use this time to make posters and plan antibullying campaigns, including an annual kindness initiative that will kick off in January.
