While students across the Riverhead Central School District were off from school on Election Day, the district’s administrators and staff were busy advancing their skills through professional development.

Throughout the day, attendees took part in classes and discussions as part of the Superintendent’s Conference Day, called “EdCamp.”

“We aimed to offer our staff educational opportunities that would provide them with skills to inspire and empower,” said Lori Koerner, executive director of curriculum, instruction and professional personnel. “We have so many passionate, talented educators in our district. Sometimes the most powerful professional development is right in front of us. We just need to tap into the expertise among us.”

Classes offered included Introduction to Mindfulness, Reiki and Creative Instruction, Vaping Prevention, Working with Data and Using Excel, and Google in the Classroom. There were also workshops related to the Fountas and Pinnell Phonics program, diversity in the classroom, social and emotional learning in English language arts, and LOM, an educational communication tool.
