A Pizza of a Time

October 27, 2020

With rolling pins and pizza dough in hand, students at Riley Avenue Elementary School in the Riverhead Central School District recently practiced their social language skills through a role-playing lesson that incorporated cooking, reading and math.

The students took turns pretending to be a customer and a chef in a “pizzeria.” Chefs took orders and followed instructions to assemble their customer’s pizza, while customers practiced their ordering and money counting skills.

The lesson culminated with all students making their own pizzas. In accomplishing this task, they learned how to follow a recipe, use proper measuring utensils, and knead and roll out dough.
