Annual Pulaski Street School Celebration Teaches Students About ‘Old Glory’

Daughters of the American Revolution, Windcrest East Veterans Group, and Riverhead High School NJROTC Help Pulaski Honor American Flag’s 249th Birthday

RIVERHEAD, NEW YORK (JUNE 2026)—Pulaski Street School, in the Riverhead Central School District, hosted its annual Flag Day celebration for fifth graders. The school welcomed the Daughters of the American Revolution to teach students about the history of the American flag and Flag Day. Members of the Windcrest East Veterans Group participated in the event as well, and the Riverhead High School NJROTC Color Guard conducted a flag-folding ceremony.

“Students learned about the history and significance of our nation’s flag while reflecting on the values of freedom, service, and citizenship,” said Stacy Woodhull, principal of Pulaski Street School. “Thank you to all of our guests and performers who helped make this meaningful event possible.”

This year marks the 249th birthday of the American flag, which was adopted on June 14, 1777. Flag Day was first proposed to rally Union support during the American Civil War, and in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson designated June 14 as Flag Day through a presidential proclamation. In 1949, National Flag Day was signed into law.
