As part of a basic skills development and occupational education class, three Riverhead High School students created a dog bandana company called Blue Waves Bandanas.
Students Ashley Censoprano, Wendy Palacios Paulino and Joselyn Valentin formed the company as a way to hone their social and work skills while also spreading school spirit — many of their bandanas feature the Riverhead “R” on them.
The students sell their “R” bandanas for $4 and personalized ones for $5 each. The money they earn is used to purchase additional supplies to keep the project going.
Through the business, the trio have learned to take, track and package orders while developing skills in marketing and business accounting.
The high schoolers will also be competing in the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce’s “Chamber Tank” business competition, styled after the popular TV show “Shark Tank,” during the week of April 26.
