In studying the culture of France as part of their French classes, Riverhead Middle School students in Meredith Domaleski’s class recently took part in a lesson about the Festival of Lights, or La Fête des Lumières.
The middle schoolers discussed some of their own holiday traditions before learning about the Festival of Lights.
“It was an opportunity for students to share more about themselves and appreciate different traditions,” said Domaleski.
The lesson included a classroom scavenger hunt that required the students to find answers to questions about the Festival of Lights, including where it is located, its history and what takes place during the annual event.
In rounding out the lesson, the students decorated their own lights using mason jars and then simulated a festival by walking into their classroom with their jars lit.
