Hearing Out Healthcare Opportunities at Riverhead High School

Career Fair in Partnership with Peconic Bay Medical Center Engages Students in Growing Field

RIVERHEAD, NEW YORK (MAY 2023) — Riverhead High School, in partnership with Peconic Bay Medical Center (PBMC), hosted its first healthcare career fair. Over 200 students, as well as faculty and staff, excitedly engaged with representatives from PBMC to learn about clinical and non-clinical careers and how they can pursue the opportunities that interest them.

“On behalf of the District, I would like to thank Peconic Bay Medical Center for helping to provide this incredible experience for our students,” said Riverhead Central School District Superintendent Dr. Augustine E. Tornatore. “Engagement with the remarkable professionals in our community is one of the best ways to get students excited about pursuing careers that complement their interests. This is especially important with an industry as crucial as healthcare.”

Students toured the booths set up throughout the Riverhead High School gymnasium, conversing with PBMC staff about their work and partaking in the interactive activities at their tables. In addition to advancing their knowledge and the opportunities ahead of them, attending students were entered into a raffle for AirPods and other prizes.

“Peconic Bay Medical Center’s wonderful partnership with the Riverhead Central School District provides a platform to inspire the next generation of aspiring medical professionals,” said PBMC Executive Director Amy Loeb, EdD, MBA, R.N. “Many students go through high school without knowing the various career paths available to them. This career fair helped to facilitate meaningful one-on-one conversations with students about the breadth of opportunities available to them, both clinical and non-clinical. We look forward to working closely with the District to continue empowering the students in our community.”

Throughout the career fair, PBMC representatives introduced students to a wide range of available positions at the hospital and in the healthcare industry. These included opportunities that are clinical in nature, such as the hospital’s comprehensive nursing and radiological technology program, as well as those more behind the scenes, such as environmental sciences and material operations. Outside of career opportunities, PBMC staff also provided students with interview and resume tips.

“The event was a tremendous success,” said Riverhead High School Assistant Principal Nicole Taylor. “We are eager to continue our partnership with Peconic Bay Medical Center and discuss further student opportunities in the healthcare field, such as mentoring, internships, job shadowing and careers.”
