Riverhead High School students Van Gatz and Caleigh Cantalupo, along with Shoreham-Wading River student Julie Kadletz, have completed a yearlong independent science research project that they will present at the Barcoding Symposium at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in June.

With the assistance of mentor Dr. Jennifer Gatz, the students captured mosquitoes from across the East End of Long Island, photo documented them and isolated their DNA. All of their lab work was conducted at Brookhaven National Laboratory using gel electrophoresis. The goal of their research is to identify certain species of mosquitoes that may be disease vectors.
