Riverhead High School seniors Bryan Arriaga and Anabela Juarez Suruy were awarded scholarships by the Long Island Delegation at the 30th annual Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute, held in Albany on March 7-9. They earned the distinction as part of their participation in the learning experience.

The students, who represented Riverhead at the institute along with fellow student Daniela Hernandez, spent three days participating in workshops and activities focused on team building and leadership. Students also met with various New York State Assembly members and special guests, including Assemblyman Phil Ramos and Congressman Paul Tonko. The event culminated with a mock assembly where the students sat in on the seat of their assemblyman and argued for or against three real bills based on their representative’s viewpoint.

The three Riverhead students were among 250 outstanding Hispanic students from across New York State to attend at no cost to the students or district. They were each selected to attend after a rigorous application process.
