Engaging Students from a Distance

To engage students while the Riverhead Central School District’s schools are closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Aquebogue Elementary School has kicked off several new initiatives.

The school began its efforts early during the week of March 23 with Principal Bryan Miltenberg filming a YouTube video in which he spoke about keeping a daily routine. To assist with that, he posts daily morning announcements that include guest students who recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Miltenberg also gives shout-outs to students who are celebrating birthdays, reads a book and talks about the character trait of the month, optimism.

To further connect to students, the school created a Facebook page that offers educational challenges students can complete at home.

“The feedback from families has been tremendous so far,” said Miltenberg. “We will continue to look for ways to reach out and support our families and community going forward.”
