Riverhead High School science students in grades 10-12 culminated their yearlong participation in Stony Brook University’s Women in Science and Engineering program with a virtual research presentation on May 4.

During the presentation, the high schoolers spoke about the scientific research and experimentation they had conducted with mentors as part of the WISE program. Their research included the effects of diffusion, bacterial culture, DNA collection, the importance and use of solar energy, and the relationship between fear conditioning and activation of cells.

“Despite being limited to virtual meetings due to the pandemic, these young women were able to expand their horizons and present their research to friends and family,” said advisor Paul Paredes, adding, “We hope that future programs will resume with live trips and invite young women interested in science and engineering to participate in this long-running program.”
