“Arts education benefits the student because it cultivates the whole child, gradually building many kinds of literacy while developing intuition, reasoning, imagination, and dexterity into unique forms of expression and communication… They learn to respect the often very different ways others have of thinking, working, and expressing themselves. They learn to make decisions in situations where there are no standard answers. By studying the arts, students stimulate their natural creativity and learn to develop it to meet the needs of a complex and competitive society. And, as study and competence in the arts reinforce one another, the joy of learning becomes real, tangible, and powerful.” (The 1994 version of the National Standards for Arts Education.)

The Riverhead School District is proud of its wonderful Fine Arts program, and its varied opportunities for learning in the arts. Through the Fine Arts Program, students are offered opportunities in Visual and Media Arts, General Music and Theory, and Performing Music. Students also enjoy our many extra-curricular arts activities, such as clubs, ensembles, and theatre. Through the arts, children learn and develop many valuable skills and habits. The arts foster self-discipline, initiative, commitment, and a dedication to improvement that enables children to further develop their skills in creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving. In addition, children who participate in the arts learn to collaborate with others and build on their ability to communicate effectively through both language and the art form. In our increasingly complex global society, acquiring these skills and habits is essential for our youth. Educating all children in the arts may be essential to their future.
