Following a highly competitive virtual math competition, Riley Avenue Elementary School mathletes Nolan Bruen, Alexandria Governali, Kaelyn Kistinger, Julia Pelis and Ryan Quick won the New York State District 5 champion title.
To earn the top spot, the students competed in the Mathleague.org state tournament on May 8 for three and a half hours via Zoom from their homes. They had advanced to the state level following a regional competition on Feb. 20, in which they concentrated on four timed rounds: the Sprint, Number Sense, Target and Team.
Following the May 8 win, Bruen, Governali, Pelis and Quick earned a spot in the national tournament, which will be held June 19.
The Riverhead School District extends its congratulations to these math superstars.
