Riverhead High School ‘Diamond Stars’ Continue to Shine

Riverhead High School varsity baseball and softball players have continued to be recognized as Newsday “Diamond Stars” for their outstanding performances on the field. Baseball pitcher Matthew Zambriski was honored for his perfect game—the first in Riverhead High School history—in the Blue Waves’ 22-0 victory over Central Islip High School. Striking out 16, Matthew threw only 75 pitches, with 65 of those pitches being strikes. For this achievement, Matthew was also named Newsday’s athlete of the week.

Baseball player Brady Hubbard was named a Diamond Star for his walk-off two-run single in Riverhead’s 2-1 win over Newfield High School.

Softball player Mya Marelli was honored as a Diamond Star for the second time this season, as she pitched a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts and went 1-3 with a walk and two RBIs in the Blue Waves’ 3-0 victory over Commack High School. Mya received additional recognition from Newsday as she helped lead Riverhead to its first softball county title. In the 4-1 win over Sachem High School North to claim the Suffolk Class AAA final, Mya hit a two-run home run and dominated on the mound, tallying 15 strikeouts and allowing no earned runs and only three hits.
