Riverhead High School Varsity Boys Golf Goes Undefeated

Riverhead Team Records Historic Season and Sets Sights on Playoff Wins

RIVERHEAD, NEW YORK (OCTOBER 2022) — The Riverhead High School varsity boys golf team has gone undefeated for the first time in the program’s history. The team has recorded a 10-0 team record and 59-1 individual head-to-head record during its phenomenal season and still has plenty of golf left to play.

“These boys put in an incredible amount of hard work in the pre-season and are still just scratching the limits of their potential,” said Varsity Boys Golf Coach Steve Failla. “I am exceptionally proud of them, and the best golf still lies ahead.”

This special group is fairly young, led by freshman Colby Baran. Colby was named to Newsday’s top 25 boys golfers on Long Island, previously tying for tenth at the Suffolk County individual tournament with a 160 as an eighth grader. In his freshman season, Colby is 10-0 in league play. He has excelled on the course and as a supportive teammate.

“Colby leads through his actions, and it has a positive impact on all of us,” said Coach Failla. “He, along with the other players, have helped this program come a long way in a short period of time.”

The outstanding eleven-man roster consists of senior Jace Pesce, juniors Ryan Densieski, Mark Gajowski, Jaxson Hubbard, Kyle Kaelin, Colin Lynch, Luke Richard, Griffin Sumwalt, Preston Swenk and Zach Timpone and freshman Colby Baran.

The Riverhead varsity boys golf team looks forward to continuing this historic season at the Suffolk County championship on October 24th and October 25th at Spring Lake Park. The Riverhead Central School District and community wish the boys the best of luck!
