Riverhead Honors Music Ensembles Win 2024 Festivals of Music’s Esprit de Corps Award

Riverhead Students Impress Judges at Virginia Beach Competition with Talent and Integrity

RIVERHEAD, NEW YORK (APRIL 2024)—The Riverhead High School honors music ensembles—comprising wind ensemble, chamber orchestra, chamber choir, and jazz ensemble—performed in the 2024 Festivals of Music in Virginia Beach, Virginia. High school student-musicians from across the country converged for a celebration of music, receiving evaluations and comments on their performances from expert adjudicators, including music professors. For their magnificent character and skill, Riverhead students were the sole recipients of the festival’s Esprit de Corps Award.

“Throughout the weekend, our students represented the district extraordinarily well and displayed a high degree of musicianship,” said Riverhead High School wind ensemble director Joseph Randazzo. “Trips like these are vital, because they allow our students to experience the musical world beyond our community and to see what they can achieve.”

The Riverhead High School performance groups were led to success by their ensemble directors: jazz ensemble director Crystal Crespo, chamber orchestra director Marisa Macchio, wind ensemble director Joseph Randazzo, and chamber choir director Leandra Wahlen. According to the Festivals of Music, the Esprit de Corps Award that was given to the Riverhead ensembles “recognizes the participating organization that displays an exemplary attitude of positive support and outstanding personal behavior throughout the festival weekend. Personal integrity, quality character values, a desire for excellence, and a spirit of cooperation serve as the cornerstone qualities of the Esprit de Corps Award.”

Students thoroughly enjoyed the weekend of working together to display their musical prowess and impress nationally acclaimed experts in the field. The trip also included a visit to Busch Gardens Williamsburg, where students excitedly engaged in rides, exhibits, and attractions.

“The competition in Virginia Beach proved to be an invaluable experience for students and teachers alike,” said Ms. Macchio. “I am so proud of how our students performed and conducted themselves throughout the weekend. It is because of their behavior and overall positivity that we earned the high honor of the Esprit de Corps Award.”
