The Riverhead Central School District has begun the extraordinarily complex endeavor of formulating plans for the possible reopening of its seven schools while it awaits official guidance from Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
“Our goal is to include all stakeholders in formulating a plan that is best for the safety and emotional well-being of our students and staff,” said interim Superintendent of Schools Christine Tona.
To that end, the district has assembled a Re-Entry Task Force and six subcommittees tasked with designing a structure for reopening based on three scenarios: full return to campus, full remote instruction, or a hybrid of partial return and partial remote instruction.
The six subcommittees are respectively focused on public health and safety, school operations logistics, teaching and learning, special education, equity and family needs, and social-emotional health. They will meet weekly throughout the summer and report back to the Re-Entry Task Force through a task force liaison. The task force and each subcommittee are comprised of a variety of stakeholders, including district administrators, union leaders, staff and community members.
The district is also in communication with superintendents across Long Island to collaborate on reopening ideas and preparation, and plans to survey families to better understand the current needs of the community.
“We are confident that by putting our ideas together in a collaborative effort, we will meet the needs of our school community, students, staff and families,” said Lori Koerner, executive director for curriculum and instruction and professional personnel.
