Riverhead Students Prepare to ‘Chalk the Walk’

Riverhead’s P.S. I Love You Day Spreads Positivity

RIVERHEAD, NEW YORK (FEBRUARY 2024) — Riverhead High School is preparing for its annual P.S. I Love You Day celebration on Friday, February 9th. Additionally, the school will hold its third Chalk the Walk event to support the mission of this meaningful day.

P.S. I Love You Day, held every second Friday of February, combats bullying, supports mental health awareness, and enhances suicide prevention through education and kindness. For this very special day, participants are encouraged to wear purple.

Suffolk County’s own Brooke and Jaimie DiPalma created P.S. I Love You Day, after tragically losing their father to suicide in 2010, with a dream to create environments in which people feel loved and looked after. P.S. I Love You Day is now observed by schools across the country.

Riverhead High School is eager to once again fulfill P.S. I Love You Day’s goal with its Chalk the Walk event. Started in 2022, Chalk the Walk is a hands-on experience in which students, faculty and staff members bring joy to one another. Chalk is set up near the Riverhead High School back entrance, and students, as well as their educators, are encouraged to craft uplifting messages and pictures to spread smiles to their peers and fellow community members.

“This is an event to break the stigma attached to mental illness and bring additional positivity and acceptance to our community,” said Riverhead High School guidance counselor and Chalk the Walk founder Jennifer Boese. “As a school counselor, community member, and mother of four young children, I see and hear a lot of difficult things on a daily basis. Everyone is going through their own battles, both internally and externally, and sometimes, those battles go unnoticed. I tell my kids every morning that I love them, to make good choices, and to be kind, even when it is hard. P.S. I Love You Day resonates with this goal, and I have enjoyed raising additional mental health awareness and helping launch this school-wide initiative.”

This year’s Chalk the Walk will kick off on February 8th from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Riverhead High School’s back entrance. On February 9th, teachers are welcome to bring their classes outside to add to the compassionate collection of messages and images. Riverhead Middle School is joining in as well this year with an after-school to further boost kindness throughout the community.

“We can all use more positive days and reasons to smile,” said Ms. Boese. “We look forward to further expanding this initiative throughout the district each year.”
