Students Explore Algebraic Fun With Function Machines

Riverhead Middle School Algebra 1 students recently had the opportunity to participate in an exciting extra-credit project that put their creativity and mathematical skills to the test. Students were challenged to design their own function machines, works that illustrate the concept of input/output relationships in algebraic functions.

This project—led by teachers Cheryl Alexander, Katelyn Carrigan, and Jenna Ciccarelli—allowed students to explore functions in a hands-on manner, encouraging them to think critically about how mathematical operations transform inputs into outputs. With colorful and imaginative designs and clever applications of algebra, students’ pieces reflected their enthusiasm and understanding of key algebraic principles.
