Keeping Your Chromebook Secure
SHUTDOWN YOUR CHROMEBOOK!
Shutting down and powering up a Chromebook is an essential part of its security protocol which includes a procedure called verified boot that can detect malware and eliminate it. If you are using a shared Chromebook and are returning it to a cart, please log out and shut down your Chromebook. For individually issued Chromebooks, it is best to shut down your Chromebook when not in use for a period of a few days.
Sleep Setting on Chromebooks
When the Chromebook lid is closed or when the Chromebook is idle for 3 hours, the Chromebook goes into a sleep state preserving all the open windows and tabs. As a Chromebook wakes from sleep state, the student’s password is now required.

How to Update Your Chromebook
It is important from a security and functionality perspective to keep the OS of your Chromebook up to date. If Google Meet isn’t working or Google Docs is acting strangely it could be caused but an out-of-date Chrome OS.
Check For Updates Yourself
- Turn on your Chromebook.
- Connect your Chromebook to Wi-Fi.
- At the bottom right, select the time.
- Select Settings.
- At the bottom of the left panel, select About Chrome OS.
- Under “Google Chrome OS,” you’ll find which version of the Chrome operating system your Chromebook uses.
- Select Check for updates.
- If your Chromebook finds a software update, it will start to download automatically.
