Riverhead Middle School family and consumer sciences teacher Amy Doucette recently gave her seventh grade students a practical lesson when she taught them how to sew a basic face mask.
“I wanted to teach my students to be self-sufficient and make something themselves rather than depend on a company that’s selling them,” said Doucette.
The students selected fabric and cut it to size, pinned and sewed in the elastic, and learned how to properly pleat the mask before sewing it around.
